Material Things is a bespoke furniture and soft furnishings business, based in Portsmouth. Monthly transactions are between £250,000 and £300,000, using two in-store WI-FI PoS terminals.

The total cost of running these terminals was between £2,300-£3,000 per month.

Challenges

The customer was paying £28,000 to run two card machines – a combination of high basic fees, hidden, and extra charges. Moreover, there were issues with the functionality of these terminals (they only worked at the business’ desk).

Combinedly, these issues had led the customer to seek out a new supplier – however, acquiring banks are nervous of furniture companies, and several had rejected their applications.

Material Things worried they would lose their card payment facility and thus accepted the extra charges levied upon them, the onerous renewals, and the poor service.

The customer thought their current contract had finished, and they were free to leave.

In fact, the supplier had rolled them onto a new 12-month contract and lease without their knowledge, meaning they would have to pay again for the two terminals and were locked into this contract for a further year.

There were premium charges on the account for transactions which were not face-to-face.

Furthermore, they were paying a premium for next day settlement which had never been discussed with them. They had been led to believe that most companies did not offer gross settlement.

In addition to being seemingly trapped in this new contract, the customer was nervous about moving to Gorilla Pay because of our newness to the market.

Solution

All our terminals feature GPRS technology which runs alongside WI-FI, meaning that our customers can take payments wherever there’s WI-FI or a mobile signal. If both connections fail, the customer has a virtual terminal they can use via the web on any PC or tablet.

Furthermore, Gorilla Pay offers next day settlement as standard, without extra charge. We also offer gross settlement to all our customers – whatever their size – making reconciliation of payments far easier for the accounts department.

A lucky encounter between the MD of Material Things and another of our clients soothed the customer regarding Gorilla Pay’s newness to the market.

Additionally, the customer can run our service alongside their current one; they can make a direct comparison with little fuss. If the customer isn’t happy with our service, they can invoke our pledge, return the equipment and we’ll repay all set-up charges.

The only things they’ll need to pay are the cost of delivering the equipment and sending it back, the monthly membership charges for the period they used the service and any transaction charges they attracted during this period.

Outcomes

Two Gorilla Pay terminals will cost the customer £500 for the next ten months, leading to a saving over the same period of around £12,000.
 
The client can ‘sit out’ their existing lease whilst also switching to Gorilla Pay, at no risk, and at a fraction of the cost of their current solution.
